Fashion Trends in Latin America

The article on Wikipedia called Latin American Clothing has very little information regarding fashion trends in Latin American culture. I would like to research how the usage of certain textiles, colors, and patterns culminate to create the unique, traditional clothing styles that are represented in Latin America. The clothing trends between different regions of the world are obviously different, mostly because the traditions behind those styles vary greatly. If I choose to research this topic, I would like to add sections about the importance of the textiles used to make the clothing, how the clothing is produced, and also the way specific trends are viewed in the society. I would love to see how fashion intertwines globally and the influence that European culture has had on Latin American culture and vice versa. The Wikipedia article provides links to articles of clothing from Chile, clothing from Mexico and Peru as well. All of these three additional articles do not provide a complete breakdown of the fashion trends in Latin America, only 2 or 3 specific articles of clothing that have some significant meaning in the culture. The only comment on the Talk page of this article is a comment about how “Latin America produce a kind of cotton that also makes clothes for a Venezuelan company”.

Which proposals have the most potential to improve Wikipedia’s coverage of Latin American and Latin@ history? Which have the best combination of content gaps and reliable sources?

Clothing is often a really important part of any culture as it’s a visible representation that anyone can see. I think it might be difficult to find sources on this other than just looking at pictures or paintings over time, and also it might be easier to focus in on a specific country. Like everyone who goes to Peru gets those sweaters made from the alpaca hair.

I would never have thought of this topic, so I think it is a good idea. Are there any countries, specially, that you would describe the fashion trends of? Have certain Latin American countries fashion become more main stream in certain countries? Why do certain countries use certain textiles? Do neighboring countries have similar fashion trends? Are bigger countries with different regional climates have the same fashion trends throughout that country? For example in America people in the South tend not to wear heavy coats because it’s warm but people in the North do. Does Latin America and the U.S. share certain fashion trends?

I think you have found an incredibly interesting topic indeed. My only concern is that you may find it difficult to talk about the many different types and styles of clothing that originated in Latin America. I think you may want to focus your research onto one or a couple different types of clothing or fashion styles so that you may talk about it in detail, as opposed to trying to talk about all the different types and styles of clothing to come out of Latin America and only being able to write a brief description for each. Might I suggest focusing on the “gaucho” of Argentina or the “polleras” of Bolivia? Although the article you found may not be solely about Argentina or Bolivia, I don’t think you could possibly be expected to talk about the fashion of every single Latin American country in that one article for the purposes of this project.

I think Brazil’s fashion industry is often overlooked for its international influence on the fashion industry. I would mention how LGBTQ organizations have impacted Brazil’s definition of fashion. I liked how you pointed out how little information was included in the article about such a influential topic.

Fashion is such a unique form of cultural expression. I like how you not only want to talk about the fashion pieces themselves, but also about their social and cultural repercussions. The cross-cultural interactions in terms of fashion between different areas of the world is also a great idea! Based on you analysis, there appears to be a content gap in regards to this topic, but I agree with Keira in that it may be more feasible to tackle one specific article of fashion unique to one Latin American country. Were you thinking of a specific one? And have you found any sources that give information about that article? Good luck 🙂
